Bridging the Gap: Durable CDR Market Pricing Survey

Purchaser and Supplier Expectations in 2025 and 2030

Download the OPIS and CDR.fyi report, 'Bridging the Gap: Durable CDR Market Pricing Survey.'

Despite its size, durable CDR is increasingly recognized as a critical tool in achieving net-zero emissions. Organizations like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the Science-Based Targets initiative have highlighted its necessity, fueling growing demand for supply contracts to support industry growth. Yet, only 4% of the 13 million metric tons of durable CDR credits contracted to date have been delivered, underscoring the industry’s early-stage challenges.

The durable CDR sector faces significant hurdles, including credit price discovery, access to capital, and the development of scalable projects. On top of these challenges, there remains a substantial disconnect between suppliers’ breakeven costs and purchasers’ willingness to pay.

To address these gaps, OPIS and CDR.fyi collaborated on a durable CDR pricing survey that offers the first market-wide insights into price expectations for durable carbon removal methods in 2025 and 2030. The survey resulted in input from 122 stakeholders across the carbon, energy, financial, and industrial sectors, creating a comprehensive view of the market’s dynamics.

Key Findings from the Report:

- Transparency and Market Growth: The report identifies a significant gap between buyers' and suppliers' price expectations, providing actionable insights to bridge this divide and support industry scaling.
- Veterans vs. Prospects: Experienced buyers and sellers demonstrated narrower gaps in price expectations, signaling the importance of market maturity in aligning pricing perspectives.
- Method-Specific Insights: The report analyzes various CDR methods—such as DACCS, BECCS, and biochar—highlighting both opportunities and barriers to cost reduction and market adoption.
- Scaling Challenges: Achieving net-zero goals by 2050 requires a multifaceted approach, which includes scaling durable CDR  – a goal that will demand greater buyer participation and significant innovation.

This CDR price report is the first of its kind, shedding light on the pricing disconnects that slow durable CDR adoption. It equips stakeholders with the data and insights needed to foster market alignment, drive innovation, and accelerate the path to global climate targets.
