Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy recently launched RenovaBio, a program poised to take a radically new approach to expanding the production and use of biofuels in Brazil.

Should Brazil’s RenovaBio program adopt a Carbon Intensity (CI) rating system similar to California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS), sugarcane ethanol’s lower CI rating would incentivize fuel suppliers to boost their sales of sugarcane ethanol and potentially diminish the market share of U.S. corn ethanol in Brazil.
